The Vibe

The beach feels spacious, relaxed and strongly suited to families, long walks and straightforward summer days. Activity gathers near the boardwalks, restaurants and central village access, while the uninterrupted sand offers quieter sections in both directions. Altura is seasonal but remains less dense than the major central Algarve resorts.

The Gulf of Cadiz often looks gentler than the western coast, although waves, wind, currents and shifting sandbars still vary. The broad upper beach has almost no natural shade, and distances become deceptive in strong heat. Supervised sections provide the best local guidance, while the dunes should be crossed only on established paths.

The ocean is calm, with waves at 0.4m, ideal for swimmers. Water temperature is 21.7°C, suitable for a spring suit or rash guard. Swimming conditions are excellent all day. The sea remains clear and inviting. Water visibility is good for snorkelers. The Atlantic water stays cool even in summer.

For activities, morning offers light winds from the northwest, perfect for cycling and running. Surfing and snorkeling conditions are optimal with small waves. About Alagoa-Altura

Alagoa-Altura is a broad sandy beach on the Castro Marim coast, directly in front of the low-rise resort village of Altura. Its pale sand, low dunes and pine-backed eastern Algarve landscape create a family shore that contrasts sharply with the cliff coves farther west.

The Local Anchor

Altura provides accommodation, restaurants and everyday services directly behind the beach. Castro Marim lies inland with its castle, saltmarsh and nature reserve, adding a historical and ecological dimension beyond the resort strip.

Praia Verde and Cabeco lie east through pine-backed coast, while Manta Rota and Cacela Velha lie west. The beach therefore forms part of a long, low-lying shoreline extending towards both the Guadiana border and the Ria Formosa.

The Landscape

Fine pale sand extends beneath a broad southern horizon, backed by low dunes, pines and modest development. There are no high cliffs, making the coast feel open and easy to walk.

Sunrise is particularly strong across the eastern water, while evening brings cooler conditions for cycling or longer beach walks. Alagoa-Altura is defined by breadth and accessibility: family resort, dune boardwalks and a long Atlantic shore within the flatter landscape of Castro Marim. The level shore and boardwalks also make Altura useful for pushchairs, older visitors and families carrying equipment. Evening is especially pleasant after the exposed beach cools, when walkers and diners return to the village frontage and the long horizon remains open.
