Armona-Ria

Armona–Ria lies in Olhão, on the island and lagoon landscape of the Ria Formosa off Olhão, where ferries and small boats cross a maze of channels before reaching the Atlantic sands. This bathing area faces the sheltered channels of the Ria Formosa rather than the open Atlantic, giving it a distinctly lagoon-side character.

The Landscape

The setting is defined by low dunes, tidal flats, salt marsh and long Atlantic beaches forming part of the barrier system that shelters the lagoon. Marsh-facing shallows and the Atlantic side give these islands two contrasting characters. Water is calmer on the ria side and more open on the ocean side, giving nearby bathing areas markedly different characters. Walking is the simplest way to understand the beach. Moving from the main access reveals changes in rock, dunes, vegetation and tide lines. Armona–Ria is a small coastal environment, not merely a place to put down a towel.
