The Vibe

Banda d'Alem feels relaxed, practical and especially suited to families or visitors wanting a conventional sandy beach. The broad bay, promenade and nearby facilities make it easy to spend several hours without complex access. Local residents and holidaymakers share the waterfront throughout the day.

The bay is more sheltered than Madeira's exposed north coast, but wind, depth changes, boat movement and occasional swell still matter. Marked bathing areas and staffed facilities provide the clearest guidance. Harbour and operating zones should remain separate from ordinary swimming.

About Banda d'Alem

Banda d'Alem is the golden-sand beach on the eastern side of Machico Bay. Its sheltered layout, imported sand and immediate connection with one of Madeira's oldest towns create an accessible family beach beneath steep green mountains.

The Local Anchor

Machico's historic centre lies immediately behind the bay through churches, squares and the Forte de Nossa Senhora do Amparo. The town is associated with the first Portuguese landing on Madeira in 1419 and retains a strong identity beyond its beach.

Sao Roque pebble beach occupies another part of the bay, while the harbour and marina activities shape the eastern waterfront. Restaurants and public transport remain close.

The Landscape

Golden sand contrasts with dark volcanic rock, green mountain walls and the deep blue bay. The imported sand creates a softer shoreline than Madeira's usual pebbles, while the enclosing valley gives the beach a natural amphitheatre.

Morning light reaches the bay early, and evening draws walkers back to the promenade. Banda d'Alem is defined by shelter and history: family sand, mountain backdrop and a waterfront embedded within the old town of Machico. The beach also suits visitors with reduced mobility and families carrying equipment because the promenade, walkways and services are close. Early morning is quieter for swimming, while evening brings residents back to the bay and softer light across the mountains and historic waterfront. The protected-looking bay also makes Banda d'Alem a useful choice when the north coast is rougher or cloudier.
