Poco Velho feels spacious, scenic and less concentrated than the busiest Acoteias entrances. Families and walkers use the main access, while the connected shoreline makes it easy to move towards quieter sand. The beach remains organised without losing the scale and continuity that define Falesia.

Atlantic swell, wind and shifting sandbars influence the whole frontage. Higher tide reduces the safe strip beneath the cliffs, and the rock base should never be treated as reliable shade because erosion remains active. Supervised areas and formal routes offer the clearest guidance, while informal cliff-edge paths should be avoided.

The day starts at 21°C under mostly clear skies. Morning temperatures hold steady until 11am. Winds pick up slightly by mid-morning, blowing from the southeast at 9 km/h, gusting to 17. By afternoon, temperatures rise to 29°C, with winds shifting to the south-southeast at 14 km/h, gusting to 26. Evening sees temperatures drop to 27°C, with winds decreasing to 8 km/h from the south, gusting to 21. Nighttime brings calm conditions, with winds at 3 km/h from the west-northwest, gusting to 6.

The ocean is calm, with waves at 0.3m, suitable for all swimmers. Water temperature is 19.7°C. Wear a spring suit or rashie. Conditions remain consistent throughout the day, with waves holding at 0.3m until early afternoon, then increasing slightly to 0.4m. The sea remains safe for swimming all day.

Morning offers ideal conditions for cycling and running, with light winds at 5 km/h from the northeast, gusting to 10. Surfing and snorkeling are also suitable during this period. About Poco Velho

Poco Velho is an eastern access section of the long Falesia shoreline in Albufeira municipality. Its broad sand, layered red-and-cream cliffs and connection with Rocha Baixinha create a beach designed for long walks and open views rather than a compact cove experience.

The Local Anchor

The eastern Albufeira resort areas and Rocha Baixinha provide the nearest accommodation, restaurants and road access. Vilamoura lies farther east beyond the lower dune-backed coast, while Acoteias continues west beneath higher cliffs and pine cover.

Poco Velho works as one named access within a much longer beach system. Choosing the correct entrance matters because the shoreline stretches for kilometres and returning by road can be less direct than walking along the sand.

The Landscape

Fine golden sand lies below warm-coloured sedimentary cliffs cut by rain channels and erosion. Eastward, the cliffs gradually lower towards Rocha Baixinha; westward, the escarpment rises and becomes more dramatic.

Morning and evening bring cooler walking conditions and stronger colour across the cliff face. Poco Velho is defined by transition and continuity: open Atlantic sand, layered cliffs and a strategic access point near the eastern end of the Falesia landscape. The long shoreline also makes Poco Velho useful for running or steady exercise before the sand heats and afternoon wind becomes stronger. Visitors carrying heavy equipment should choose their access carefully, as the return route can feel much longer after several hours on the beach.
