About Porto Santo - Ribeiro Cochino
The Vibe
Ribeiro Cochino feels friendly, relaxed and less hotel-dominated than Ribeiro Salgado or Cabeco da Ponta. Residents and visitors share the shore, while nearby bars and food options make it easy to remain through lunch or sunset. The long beach still provides quieter space away from the main accesses.
Wind, waves and currents can vary even when the water appears gentle. The exposed upper sand has almost no natural shade, and long shoreline walks require water and sensible timing. The recognised bathing area and seasonal supervision provide the clearest framework.

The Setting
About Ribeiro Cochino
Ribeiro Cochino is a sociable central-western section of Porto Santo's long beach, between the Pedras Pretas access and the area near Bar do Henrique. Its broad golden sand, warm-looking water and mix of local and visitor facilities create one of the island's most animated beach sections.
The Local Anchor
Bar do Henrique is the best-known practical reference near the western access. Pedras Pretas lies east, while resort areas and Calheta continue farther west along the connected coast.
Vila Baleira remains close enough for shops, transport and cultural visits, yet Ribeiro Cochino feels more informal than the town-centre beach at Fontinha. Access points matter because the uninterrupted shore is long.
The Landscape
Fine golden sand extends below low dunes and dry coastal vegetation. Clear southern water and a broad horizon dominate the view, while the island's pale hills rise inland.
Evening is especially sociable as the beach cools and people gather near the bars. Ribeiro Cochino is defined by shared island life: local meeting places, warm sand and a continuous beach used by residents and visitors alike. The beach works naturally as a meeting place rather than a quiet hotel enclave. Early morning offers the most space for swimming or exercise, while late afternoon brings a stronger mix of local families, walkers and visitors gathering around the established beach bars. The broad shore also suits steady morning exercise. Food and drink remain close to the main access.
